This seriously has to be the strangest news item of the week. Megaupload, the,
uh, _mega_ popular file sharing site has just released their new ad campaign,
which employs several RIAA endorsed recording artists, such as Will.I.Am, Macy
Gray, P. Diddy, Chris Brown, Lil Jon, Snoop Dogg, Kim Kardashian (she’s an
artist?), Floyd Maywhether (wait..?), Alicia Keys, and Kanye West. It appears
that Will and Macy are the only ones that contributed actual vocals to the
track, with the others contributing soundbites, awkwardly matched to the beat.
There’s also a rhyming power-point presentation included. “Check-check-check
it out,” as Chris Brown says.

Since this is a big “fuck you” to virtually all of these artists’ major label
parent companies, Universal has already blocked the song from YouTube,
claiming that because many of the artists are signed to the label, that this
infringes on their rights. We’re not sure where this falls legally – does
will.i.am have to get permission from Universal when he does a Taco Bell
commercial? Does Interscope own the rights to Black Eyed Peas’ Doritos song?

Megaupload site founder, Kim Dot Com, who commissioned the track, suggests
otherwise.
