Understanding Baby Eczema
When a skin rash cannot be blamed on poison ivy or chicken pox, the culprit is baby eczema. In this condition, the skin turns red, scaly and develops sores. Itching becomes bad and skin begins to shed like scales.
Other name you might know eczema under is dermatitis – inflamation of the skin with pink discoloration and sore. Baby eczema is a common child problem as out of ten kids at least one kid gets eczema and majority of them get it before they turn five years old.
There is still chance for your kid to develop baby eczema even if they are above the age of 5, but when they become teenagers, the chances will be very small.
Baby eczema not only make the skin very dry, it also makes it to itch badly. Skin starts to break out and develop rashes. Eczema is a condition which comes and goes frequently and therefore it is chronic.
Special kind of cells will react to any foreign bodies which com in contact with the skin. Technically, the baby’s skin will get inflame to create protection. Foreign objects cause the reaction which makes these cells to over-react. This turns the skin itchy, sore and red.
Children, who get eczema frequently, have a larger quantity of these special cells.
Usually, people who have family members with asthma, hay fever or any allergies are more prone to getting eczema. Baby eczema is a problem passed down through the genes of their parents.
Some scientists say that people, who as children have had eczema, are at a higher risk of developing asthma or hay fever later in their life. Allergies can only make eczema worse.
The good news is that baby eczema is not contagious, so children can be happy about not catching the infection. Rash development is the first baby eczema symptom. The rash will go away in the beginning, but will come back as well in couple days. Baby eczema starts to develop behind the knees or inside of your baby’s elbows. It can also spread towards the face or other body parts.
Because rashes can be caused due to many other reasons apart from eczema, the doctor will examine the rashes and its cause very carefully. If eczema is confirmed, the child may have to use a moisturizing cream or lotion to stop the itchiness and drying of the skin.
If the itching is really irritating, antihistamine can be taken in either liquid or pill form. When doctor sees that your baby got infected, he will give your baby to use antibiotics.
There are certain things which trigger baby eczema and should be avoided by children who get eczema frequently. Perfumes, detergents, soap, dry air in winters with very little moisture, and sweaty and hot skin.
You can expect that your baby can have an increased irritations when comes in contact with dustmites or scratchy fabrics. The child must abstain from scratching even if the skin is itching badly, as that will make the skin itch more badly.
The skin can be also infected by various bacterias when skin breaking and bleeding occurs. A washcloth can be dipped on cool water and placed on the area of itchiness. As a worried parrent, you needt to keep your baby’s nails very short so it can not scratch the skin when irritated.
And at last, your baby should be hydrated very often to provide nice moisture to its dry skin.
